Simultaneous interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting means that the interpreter speaks at the same time as the speaker. The interpreter sits in a booth with a headset and microphone. The person requiring translation is given earplugs through which the interpreter’s voice can be heard. In this way, the interpreter does not disturb the speaker and the person needing translation can listen to the interpreter without being too distracted by the original speaker. Simultaneous interpreting can be done online as well. Programmes such as Zoom Meetings and Microsoft Teams have a special interpreting booth built in for this purpose. The interpreter is placed in the booth and is therefore inaudible to the speaker. The listeners can then choose in which language they want to listen. Super easy, right?

Consecutive interpreting

Consecutive interpreting means that the speaker speaks first and the interpreter takes notes in the meantime. When the speaker has finished, the interpreter has the floor in order to render the translation. Consecutive interpreting can of course be done online as well. In this case an interpreting booth is not necessary, so consecutive interpreting can be realised using various online tools.
